Onomi

A calm, multilingual world where first words come alive

Onomi is a Montessori-inspired vocabulary app that teaches toddlers ages 2–5 their first words in Greek, English, French, or Russian — through real photographs, warm native narration, and gentle, ad-free play. No timers. No red X's. No overstimulation — just one beautiful object at a time, and the quiet joy of learning its name.

Built by a parent, not a committee

Onomi started as a search for a screen a toddler could actually learn from, not just swipe through. Every layout, pacing choice, and animation has been tested with real toddlers at home and refined around what genuinely holds a young child's attention without demanding it.

The design follows the Montessori principle of "isolation of stimulus": one object, one word, one moment of focus at a time, with nothing competing for a two-year-old's attention. Backgrounds stay neutral and uncluttered during learning. There are no punitive buzzers or flashing red X's when a child taps the wrong answer — just a gentle wiggle, and, after a couple of tries, a soft glow on the right item paired with a spoken fact about it.

If a child pauses for a moment mid-activity, the next unlearned item offers a small, non-verbal bounce — a quiet nudge rather than an instruction, so the child stays in charge of the pace.

A note on screen time

More like a growing picture book than an app

We know many parents are (rightly) wary of screen time this young — so Onomi was built to behave like one. There's no autoplay, no infinite feed, no push notifications, and no algorithm trying to keep your child watching. Each screen shows one photo and one idea; your child either taps Next to turn the page, or picks the one answer they think is right — the same two motions as reading together, just with a voice built in. The content is static and finite: once a topic is done, it's done, and Onomi quietly waits to be picked up again, exactly where you left off.

Four calm ways to play

📖

Learn

Each topic opens on a calm, cream-colored screen with a small set of real, isolated objects. Tapping one narrates its name aloud, then offers short, concrete facts — one at a time.

🧩

Quiz

Once a topic is learned, five short quiz rounds begin: finding a named item, sorting ones that share a trait, and picking the odd one out.

My Words

Once your child finishes their first topic, a growing personal gallery appears — every word learned so far, across every category, on one calm scrolling shelf. Tap a picture to hear its name again.

Find It!

A simple, endless mini-quiz your child can return to anytime: four pictures appear, and Onomi asks for one by name — pulling from everything learned across every world so far.

Eight real worlds to explore

Onomi already covers 8 real worlds — Fruits, Vehicles, Farm Animals, Colours, House Items, Body Parts, Vegetables, and Opposites — each built to the same one-thing-at-a-time standard. New worlds arrive regularly.

Greek, English, French, and Russian — done properly

Bilingual toddler apps are rare, and the good ones are rarer still. Onomi records every word separately with native narrators in each language, rather than running text through machine translation. The underlying database tracks grammatical gender and singular or plural form for every word, so a Greek sentence reads the way a Greek parent would actually say it — instead of sounding translated.

Want to raise a bilingual (or trilingual) child? Turn on Bilingual Mode and Onomi narrates every word in two languages of your choosing, one after another, so your child hears both without either feeling like an afterthought.

We started this for Greek-speaking and bilingual European households — an audience most large learning-app studios leave underserved — and we're building the same care into French and Russian as we grow.

No ads. No tracking. No surprises.

  • Zero telemetry — no personal data is collected from children, ever.
  • Fully offline after the initial download, which keeps things private and makes it usable anywhere.
  • Designed around COPPA and GDPR-K principles from day one, not bolted on afterward.
  • A simple parental gate protects settings and any link that would take a child outside the app.
  • One modest one-time purchase (Full Access) unlocks the whole app — no subscriptions, no nagging prompts.

Questions parents ask

What ages is Onomi designed for?

Roughly ages 2 to 5, with pacing and vocabulary calibrated to early language development. Many families keep playing well past age 5.

Which languages does it support — is it really multilingual?

Onomi supports Greek, English, French, and Russian, with every word recorded separately by native narrators. Turn on Bilingual Mode to hear every word in two languages of your choosing.

What's the difference between Learn, Quiz, My Words, and Find It?

Learn introduces new words one object at a time; Quiz checks what was just learned in a topic; My Words is a gallery of everything your child has learned so far, for free browsing; and Find It! is an endless mini-quiz that draws from every world already explored.

Does the app need an internet connection?

No. Images and audio download once, and the app runs fully offline after that.

Will there be ads or pushy in-app purchases?

No ads, ever. A single one-time purchase (Full Access) unlocks the whole app, with no subscriptions and no characters selling anything to your child.

When can I download it?

The app is in active development and is being prepared for the App Store and Google Play. Email us to hear the moment it launches.

Do I have to pay to use it?

No — every one of Onomi's 8 worlds includes at least one full topic that's completely free from the first launch, no trial timer and no forced paywall. A single optional one-time purchase, Full Access, unlocks everything else whenever you're ready.
